How will you express your gratitude?

“Gratitude makes sense of our past,
brings peace for today,
and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
- Melody Beattie

Today we celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States. Many of us, as we gather around to enjoy a feast with friends and family, will take turns sharing what we’re grateful for.

Whether you have a regular gratitude ritual, looking to create one, or are selecting a prompt for your own Thanksgiving gathering, here are a few ways you could approach your gratitude practice:

  • Consider what you’re grateful for in the past, in this present moment, and in the future.

  • Go through the alphabet and list out something for each letter.

  • Write a gratitude letter to someone in your life to share what you appreciate most about them.

  • Find a way to do a random act of kindness for someone, without any expectation of reciprocity.

  • Do something with a loved one with the sole focus of enjoying the moment with them.

  • Consider yourself in 20 years - what will you have been grateful for as you look back on your life.

  • Reflect back on an experience that changed the trajectory of your life or career. What are you grateful for in that situation?

  • Consider something that’s hard in your life right now. What can you be grateful for in the midst of this challenge?

  • Meet someone new and learn their story. Learn what they’re grateful for.

  • Find an organization that aligns with your gratitude. Perhaps it’s one that supported you or a loved one through a difficult time, or supports a cause you’re passionate about.

  • Consider a time when you were overcome with emotion. What gratitude does that bring up for you?

This Thanksgiving, as a solo practice or with loved ones, consider what you’re thankful for this season.
